What To Do If Your Leather Get Wet
Whenever you forget the umbrella, your leather bag will get soaked. Leather is meant to be kept away from water as it can cause damage such as: leaving water spots, fading the dye, and stretching it out, unless it’s been treated with a protective coating. Small amounts of water being spilled on it will not harm it. Wipe the leather till fully dry if it comes in contact with water. If you are able to keep the leather away from water, however, that will increase its lifespan significantly.
Just be sure you know what to do when your bag does get wet. Your first tip is to act fast. Here’s the rest of the tips on how to care for wet leather:
1. How To Dry Wet Leather
Wipe the leather with a dry cloth and allow the wet leather to fully dry naturally at room temperature. (Don’t use a blow dryer or other heat source). For a jacket, hang it on a wide, padded hanger. For bags, boots, or shoes, stuff them with crumpled newspaper to absorb excess water and help them hold their shape.
2. Apply Leather Conditioner
The main problem when the leather gets wet actually arises as the leather dries. When leather gets wet, the oils in the leather bind to the water molecules. As the water dries and evaporates, it draws out the oils with it. The leather’s loss of natural oils causes it to lose its supple quality and turn brittle.
Ensure that the type of leather conditioner you use is appropriate for the type of leather you are protecting. Apply a reasonably thick coat of leather conditioner while the leather is still slightly wet. Massage the conditioner into the surface of the leather, and leave it to dry for several hours or overnight. The conditioner will penetrate the leather and replenish the natural oils that were stripped by the water. Learning how to use leather conditioner will increase the lifespan of your leather product.
3. Protect
If, after drying, your product still seems overly dry in places, apply additional conditioner to those areas and buff the entire surface of the leather. (After you’ve addressed the current wet leather situation, you can also help make your leather more water-resistant by applying a water and stain repellent before it gets wet again.) Sensitive leather should not be exposed to bad weather, despite waterproofing.
