At first glance, bison leather may look like another type of leather.
But put it next to conventional cowhide and the difference becomes immediately visible.
The most obvious difference is the grain.
A Grain You Can’t Really Fake
American Bison naturally has a much more pronounced grain structure than typical cowhide. Its surface has a large, irregular pebble texture that varies across the hide.
Unlike an embossed grain, this variation comes naturally from the hide itself. Different areas can have different grain patterns—larger and more pronounced in some places, tighter in others.
That variation is part of what makes bison interesting.
Cowhide generally offers a more consistent and familiar surface, making it easier to achieve a uniform appearance across a product. Bison is less predictable—and that’s exactly the point.
Soft, But Substantial
Despite its rugged appearance, bison leather doesn’t necessarily feel stiff or heavy.
The American Bison leather we use has a semi-soft hand feel, with a lightly tumbled surface and a waxed and oiled finish.
This creates an interesting combination:
A rugged appearance with a soft, flexible feel.
The surface can also show a subtle pull-up effect as the leather moves and flexes, creating variations in tone that become part of its character.
Full-Grain and Naturally Finished
Our American Bison is full-grain leather with an aniline finish.
Rather than covering the surface with a heavy coating, an aniline finish allows the natural grain and variation of the hide to remain visible.
That means small differences in texture, colour and grain are not imperfections to be hidden.
They are part of the material.
Bison vs. Cowhide
The difference isn’t simply about which animal produces “stronger” leather.
Both can produce excellent leather, depending on the hide, tanning process, thickness and finishing.
The more interesting difference is in character.
Cowhide offers a versatile and relatively familiar surface. Bison brings a deeper, more irregular grain, a softer hand and a more visibly natural appearance.
For leather goods, that makes bison particularly interesting when the material itself is meant to be noticed.
Every section has its own character.
No two pieces look exactly alike.
Why We Chose Bison
Walklo is interested in leather that becomes more interesting through use—not leather that needs to remain perfectly uniform.
That’s why we explore materials from different origins and tanning traditions.
Our American Bison leather is sourced and tanned in the United States, selected for its distinctive grain, natural variation and character.
For us, bison offers something different from conventional cowhide:
more texture, more variation, and more character.
It’s a leather that doesn’t try to look perfect.
And that’s exactly what makes it worth keeping.
